Can’t connect XPM: “You’re not the admin” error

Before proceeding, make sure you’ve followed the steps to connect Vinyl to Xero Practice Manager (XPM).

If you’ve already started the connection process and see an error message saying you’re not the admin, it’s likely because your XPM user account doesn’t have permission to connect third-party apps.

This setting needs to be enabled by someone with admin access in your XPM account.


Why You’re Seeing This Message

XPM requires users to have explicit permission to connect third-party add-ons like Vinyl. If this setting isn’t enabled on your user profile, the connection will fail even if your account has other access rights.

This is a restriction set by Xero. Vinyl can’t bypass or request this permission automatically.


How to Enable “Connect 3rd Party Add-ons” in XPM

A Xero Practice Manager admin can enable this for you by updating your user permissions:

  1. Log in to your Xero Practice Manager account

  2. Go to the Business section and click on Settings

  3. Select and click on "Staff"

  4. Click on the staff member’s name (the person connecting Vinyl)

  5. Open the Permissions tab

  6. Scroll to the Practice Administration section

  7. Enable the toggle for Connect 3rd-party add-ons

Once this setting is turned on, you can return to Vinyl and complete the connection to XPM.
