What this error means
If Vinyl joined your meeting but the recording shows "recording permission denied", it means the meeting platform (usually Zoom) did not grant Vinyl permission to record. The Notetaker was present in the meeting, but it was blocked from capturing audio or video.
This is a meeting platform setting issue — not a Vinyl account issue.
Why it happens
The most common cause is that the meeting host's recording settings did not allow participants to record. In Zoom, recording permissions are controlled by the host and can be restricted at the account or individual meeting level.
Specific situations where this occurs:
You were a participant (not the host), and the host had not enabled recording for participants.
The Zoom account's admin settings have local recording disabled for external participants.
The host did not grant recording permission during the meeting.
What to do
If you were the host
Log in to your Zoom Admin Portal.
Go to Account Settings → Recording.
Make sure Local Recording is enabled for both internal and external participants.
Save your settings and try recording the next meeting.
If you were a participant (not the host)
The host needs to enable recording permissions. Before your next meeting with this host:
Ask the host to enable local recording in their Zoom settings, or to grant recording permission during the meeting.
Alternatively, if you are the meeting organiser, switch to using your own Zoom account as the host so you control the recording settings.
Preventing this in future
When hosting a Zoom meeting, confirm your recording settings allow participants to record before the meeting starts.
If Vinyl is joining as a bot participant, the host's settings must permit external participant recording.
