My meeting recorded but there's no transcript (no audio detected)

What to do when a meeting shows a recording duration but no transcript or notes, usually because no audio was captured.

If a meeting shows a recording length (for example, 21 minutes) but no transcript or notes appear, it usually means Vinyl didn't capture any audio during the meeting. When no sound comes through, there is nothing for Vinyl to transcribe, so the transcript stays empty even though a recording was created.

Why this happens

The most common cause is that the microphone or system audio wasn't reaching Vinyl during the meeting. This can happen when:

  • The wrong microphone or audio input was selected on the device.

  • The microphone was muted, disconnected, or blocked by another app.

  • System or meeting audio wasn't being shared with Vinyl.

If Vinyl only detects silence, it can also assume the meeting hasn't started yet and step out, which leaves you with a recording that has a duration but no usable audio or transcript.

First, rule out a normal delay

Transcripts and notes can take a little time to appear, especially for longer meetings. If the meeting only just finished, wait up to 30 minutes and refresh. If it's been longer than that and there's still no transcript, the steps below will help.

How to confirm it was an audio issue

Open the meeting and play back the recording. If the recording is silent (no voices can be heard), then no audio was captured, which is why there's no transcript.

How to prevent it next time

  • Do a quick microphone check before the meeting starts and confirm you can hear sound coming through.

  • Make sure the correct microphone or audio input is selected on your device.

  • Check the microphone isn't muted, and that no other app is using or blocking it.

  • For in-person mobile recordings, keep the Vinyl app open and in the foreground during the meeting.
