Why does Vinyl's email integration ask for broad Gmail permissions?

Explains why Google's consent screen shows broad Gmail permissions when connecting email to Vinyl, and exactly what Vinyl does and doesn't do with your mailbox.

When you connect your Gmail account to Vinyl, Google's permission screen can look broader than you'd expect — it may list the ability to read, send, and even delete email. This is expected, and this article explains why it happens and exactly what Vinyl does (and does not) do with your mailbox.

Why the permissions look so broad

Google groups related Gmail permissions together into a single set on its consent screen. To let Vinyl draft and send follow-up emails on your behalf, Google requires you to grant its standard Gmail permission set — and these permissions cannot be split apart or trimmed down to "drafts only."

So even though Vinyl only needs to create and send the emails you ask it to, the consent screen still shows Google's full bundle of Gmail permissions. The wording comes from Google, not from Vinyl.

What Vinyl actually does with your email

  • Only acts when you ask it to. Vinyl drafts or sends an email only when you explicitly request it inside a meeting chat.

  • Never sends automatically. Vinyl will never send an email on its own without you taking an action.

  • Never reads, scans, or deletes your inbox. Vinyl does not browse, monitor, or remove your existing emails, despite the permissions Google lists.

You stay in control

You can disconnect your email at any time from Settings > Integrations. Master Admins can also turn the email permission off for the whole team. Disconnecting immediately revokes Vinyl's access to your mailbox.
