How Vinyl uses storage on Android
When you record an in-person meeting using the Vinyl mobile app, the audio is captured and stored temporarily on your device before being uploaded to Vinyl and processed. This means your phone needs enough free storage to hold the recording file while it's being uploaded.
The amount of storage used depends on the length of the meeting, longer meetings create larger temporary files. Once the recording has been successfully uploaded and processed, Vinyl clears the temporary file from your device.
What happens when storage is low
If your Android device doesn't have enough free storage, you may experience:
Recording failures — Vinyl may stop recording mid-meeting or fail to start at all.
Recordings not uploading — The file may be captured but fail to process if there isn't enough space to complete the upload.
Missing or incomplete recordings — The recording may appear in the Recovery screen rather than in your main Recordings list.
App crashes or freezing — Extremely low storage can cause the app to become unstable during a recording session.
If a recording is affected by low storage, check the Recovery screen in the app, recordings that didn't process correctly will appear there and can often be reprocessed once storage is freed up.
How to check your available storage
Open your Android Settings.
Tap Storage (or Device care → Storage on Samsung devices).
Check how much space is available. We recommend having at least 1 GB free before starting a long recording session.
How to free up space on Android
If you're running low, here are the quickest ways to free up storage before a meeting:
Clear app caches — Go to Settings → Apps, select an app, and tap Clear cache. Do this for large apps like browsers, streaming apps, or social media.
Delete unused apps — Remove apps you no longer use.
Move photos and videos to the cloud — Back up your camera roll to Google Photos or another service, then delete local copies.
Delete downloaded files — Check your Downloads folder for large files you no longer need.
Use Android's built-in storage cleaner — Many Android devices have a built-in tool under Settings → Storage that identifies files safe to delete.
Tips for reliable recordings
Check your available storage before important or long meetings.
Make sure the Vinyl app is up to date, updates sometimes include improvements to how storage is managed.
If a recording didn't appear after a meeting, check the Recovery screen in the app before assuming it's lost.
If you've freed up storage but are still experiencing recording problems, check that Vinyl has the necessary permissions enabled (microphone and notifications) in your Android Settings → Apps → Vinyl. If the issue persists, reach out to our support team via the chat bubble in the app.
